Advisory To Registered Medical Practitioners Not to Prescribe Alternative Medicines and Health Products

Punjab Healthcare Commission has issued the official Notification letter on 24th July, 2020 in connection with Advisory To Registered Medical Practitioners Not to Prescribe Alternative Medicines and Health Products.

Reference is letter No. F,4-2/2017 (Health & OTC), dated 23-07-202 from Government of Pakistan, Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination, Drug Regulation Authority of Pakistan on the above subject.

The above referred letter stipulates that the food supplements and nutritional products are considered as complimentary products and unlike Allopathic Medicines, they are not categorized as Essential Medicines which satisfy the priority healthcare needs of the population.

Internationally, the food supplements, nutritional and Nutraceutical products are being marketed as Over The Counter (OTC) or non-prescription products. However, It has been observed that the physicians are regularly prescribing these products.

Therefore, the consumer is under compelling condition to purchase such products being prescribed by the registered medical practitioners and does not have any choice on his/her own.

Keeping in view the above facts, you are hereby directed to stop such practice, In line with the International best practices and WHO’s guide and stop prescribing food supplements, nutritional and Nutraceutical products.
